A piping and drumming course of this type has long been associated with Sabhal Mòr Ostaig with many of today’s top young players having attended these courses at the College. In recent years, this course has been directed under the skilful guidance of world renowned piper and Judge Iain MacFadyen and Skye piper and accomplised drummer, Andrew MacPherson.
The aim of the course is to develop piping and drumming skills for any student under 18 who has a reasonable grasp of playing tunes on the practice chanter but preferably has been playing for a while on the pipes too. Students are encouraged to take part in both the piping and drumming classes with the aim of improving their timing and rhythm and the course is split between the two classes.
On the course, students are taught “light music” being the recognised competition Marches, Strathspeys and Reels, together with hornpipes, Gaelic airs and jigs. They are also taught “Ceòl Mòr” (or the great music) being the techniques and tunes found in the classical pìobaireachd style.
